1325

A founding member of the collective MAMAZA, May Zarhy creates a new work in collaboration with American dancer Kathryn Enright, who, most recently, has been working with Laurent Chetouane and Chris Haring/Liquid Loft, among others. The two performers discovered a common interest in their desire to “simply dance.” They wanted to give form to what their bodies know without being ironic or explicative, cheesy or overtly intellectual, to allow their sensitivity to guide the process as well as the form of the piece. It is from this basis that they created the piece 1325.

Movement for (seemingly) Nothing

That which cannot be avoided
That which makes perfect sense
A sigh that cannot be kept in
That slip of tongue
That laughter
That naivety a mature man tries constantly to avoid
That wise giggling of the elderly
The friction between two
The crack in one’s voice
The breaking of a glass
Falling all of a sudden
Stumbling upon one’s foot
Rearranging one’s hair
And forgetting where it all began.

It is this uncatchable drive that 1325 makes tangible. The performers transform right in front of the spectator: changing faces and bodies, at times being playful and naive, at others, virtuosic and energetic, morphing between minimalism and rich density. 1325 derives from one's possibility to imagine. It unfolds the obvious in ways that reveal unexpected, exciting potentialities.

Zarhy and Enright navigate various musical landscapes, cultural influences and personal artifacts while insisting on no hierarchy of form or style. In a multidimensional arena, where happenings are not reduced to their meaning, concept, or a two dimensional image, the person and her experience take center stage. It is there that we are invited to enter this slip of time and enjoy...
